Upbringing

Parenting should be gentle in approach, but essentially reliable and strict. A child should understand well that, although their parents love them, they are not the centre of the world, but one of the members of a family with their own responsibilities.

A wise upbringing should not be based on orders (regardless of how reasonable), nor on the requirement for unquestioning obedience from the child, but on the art of persuading, explaining and provoking genuine interest. Essentially, the task of parents is to captivate. If the child is completely uninterested or does not like some parental order so that they begin to be evasive and behave cunningly just not to do it, then we can conclude definitively that nothing good will come of it anyway. Parents need to control the behaviour of their child by explaining in detail what should and should not be done and why, without threatening to use physical punishment nor trying to break a child’s will. If the parents and child respect each other, then the child, without any compulsion, has a desire to help and support their parents. It is important to teach children the right way to imitate adults: to understand which behaviours are good and can become a model for them, and which ones are bad and are an example of what not to do. They need to know how to learn from others, while remaining independent.

For a child, it is very important to instill independence, self-sufficiency, initiative and a conscious attitude to personal work. There is no need to immediately help a child if something is not working out for them, especially if they are not asking for help. In many cases, you can learn something only by trial and error.

Of course, sometimes it is easier and faster for parents to do something themselves than to wait until the child learns to do it quickly and efficiently themselves. But such situations will instill in the child the feeling that trying and making an effort is senseless and you need to wait for someone who will do everything for you. This approach, most likely, will not affect their adult life fate too positively.

In general, a working upbringing in traditional culture was the most important aspect of child rearing. This was, of course, primarily due to the fact that additional hands were needed. From a fairly young age, children would participate in the work almost on an equal basis with adults. But this also has a deep sacred meaning. The child initially grew to be a part of something larger, which strengthened connections with the outside world, including with the bloodline. Upbringing took place in the midst of real laborious activity, with traditions and cultural norms left over from ancestors an integral part of everyday life. And, of course, the skill of hard work is one of the most valuable contributions parents make towards the happy and prosperous future of a child. The ability to properly fulfill oneself through work (in addition to the obvious
